Carriers gear up for the peak season

MAERSK Line appears to have thrown down the gauntlet to its competitors with its recent announcement of a US$750 per TEU peak season surcharge (PSS) on the Asia-North Europe trade, as shipping lines look to get set for a strong peak season ahead.

MSC has joined the fray by announcing a $400 per TEU surcharge on all shipments from Asia to Europe, commencing on August 1. Similar increases have been announced by CMA CGM and Evergreen ($250 per TEU) and ZIM ($175 per TEU), among others.

While none of the other lines have managed to rival Maersk's PSS, the intention of the shipping lines is clear this year: the peak season is coming and it's time to make amends for the losses of 2009—which should be a distant memory if the market keeps heading in its current direction
