OWNERS of idles ships could not have had it better. Rising trade and container scarcity helped bring down out-of-business ship capacity to 0.38 million TEU by June 21 from 1.17 million TEU in early April, bringing its share in the overall cellular fleet to 2.8 per cent, according to figures from the Paris-based Alphaliner. A recovery in trade volumes has helped to bring back over 1.2 million TEU of idle and new vessels into active service in the last three months. The ongoing container scarcity too has proved to be a blessing for carriers. The urgency to move boxes where the volumes are, led carriers to deploy 55,500 TEU of capacity to transport empty boxes especially to the Far East
