According Alphaliner’s rankings for the first half of the year, the positions of the top three container carriers, Maersk, MSC and CMA CGM, remain unchanged.

However, MSC increased its slot capacity by the largest amount over the period, increasing its fleet by 196,000teu to 1.7 million teu, closing on Maersk’s 2 million teu fleet.

The statistics also show that Evergreen Line has slipped out of the top-five for the first time since the 1980s.

The Taiwanese carrier is now ranked sixth, with APL moving up to fourth place and Hapag-Lloyd moving up to fifth.

APL increased its fleet by 21% and Hapag Lloyd’s by 25%, while Evergreen’s fleet grew by just 7% over the first six months.

Out of the world’s top 20 carriers, only NYK saw its fleet decrease, as it contracted by 6% of operational capacity, mainly through scrapping.

In percentage terms, CSAV’s fleet grew by the largest amount, increasing by 51%.

Over the first six half, the capacity of the active containership fleet expanded by 15.3% to 13.3 million teu, thanks to new orders of 740,000teu and the re-activation of 1.2 million teu that had been laid-up during the recession. Scrapping accounted for a loss of 110,000teu.
